Monaco and Menton occupy opposite ends of the same short stretch of coast near the Italian border, and they could not be more different. Monaco is the principality — a sovereign state of extraordinary density, wealth, and precision, where Formula One cars race through the streets every May. Menton, ten minutes east, is a quiet, slightly faded Belle Époque resort town famous for its lemons and its extraordinary climate.

Monaco rewards the curious visitor who looks beyond the casino. The Oceanographic Museum, founded by Prince Albert I, is world-class. The old town above the port has real character. Menton's old town is one of the most beautiful on the Riviera — pastel-coloured, Italian-influenced, and almost entirely free of tourists. The Serre de la Madone garden, created by Lawrence Johnston, is among the finest in Europe.

Monaco during the Grand Prix in May is a once-in-a-lifetime experience if you can get tickets — or a complete nightmare if you cannot. The rest of the year it is open and functional. Menton is excellent in winter — the lemon trees are fruiting, the light is exceptional, and you will have the old town almost entirely to yourself.

Walk the coastal path from Menton to the Italian border village of Ventimiglia — it takes about ninety minutes each way along a path above the sea, passing the frontier with no formalities. Have lunch in Ventimiglia at one of the harbour restaurants and take the train back. It is one of the most satisfying half-days on the entire coast.
