Palma & Southwest — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
Palma is the finest city in the Balearics and one of the most underrated in the Mediterranean — a city of 400,000 with a Gothic cathedral of extraordinary ambition, a historic quarter of Renaissance palaces and Arab baths, and a food and cultural scene that operates at a level entirely disproportionate to the island's size. The southwest coast below the city has the most developed resort infrastructure in Mallorca, alongside some of the finest sailing waters in the western Mediterranean.
Warum Palma & Southwest besuchen
The Cathedral of Palma — La Seu — is one of the great Gothic cathedrals of Europe, its interior flooded with coloured light from the rose window and its position above the sea wall giving it a drama that the inland cathedrals of France and Germany cannot match. The old quarter behind it — Es Born, the Arab Baths, the Almudaina Palace — rewards several hours of exploration. The food scene in Palma is genuinely excellent, ranging from the traditional ensaïmada pastry shops to serious contemporary restaurants.
Beste Reisezeit
Palma works year-round — it is a functioning city and the cultural calendar runs through winter. The southwest coast resorts are best from May through October. Sailing season peaks from June through September when the winds are reliable and the marinas are full.
Nova Insider
The Mercat de l'Olivar in Palma — the city's covered market — is the finest food market in the Balearics and one of the best in Spain. Go on a Saturday morning, buy jamón, local cheese, and the finest ensaïmada you will find anywhere, take them to the bar at the back of the market, and have breakfast with the Palma residents who do this every week. It costs almost nothing and is better than any hotel breakfast on the island.
