Formentera — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
Formentera is the smallest and most remote of the main Balearic islands — a flat, pine-covered island twenty minutes by fast ferry from Ibiza, with no airport, no mass tourism development, and some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean. The water here — a UNESCO Marine Reserve — is the clearest in the western Mediterranean, coloured an impossible turquoise over the seagrass beds that filter it to a quality that rivals the Maldives.
Por qué visitar Formentera
Ses Illetes beach, on the northern tip of the island, is consistently rated among the finest in Europe — a narrow spit of white sand with shallow turquoise water on both sides, and the Ibiza skyline visible on the horizon. The Camí Vell, the old road that runs the length of the island through pine forest and saltpans, is the finest cycling route in the Balearics. The island is small enough to circumnavigate by bicycle in a day.
Cuándo visitar
May and June are ideal — the water is warm enough to swim, the beaches are uncrowded, and the island is at its most beautiful. July and August are the peak season — the fast ferries from Ibiza run continuously and the beaches fill. September remains warm and quieter. Formentera outside the summer season is almost entirely closed — most restaurants and accommodation shut from October through April.
Nova Insider
Hire a bicycle from the port at La Savina and cycle to the lighthouse at Cap de Barbaria on the southern tip of the island — the road runs through pine forest and scrubland to a clifftop above the open Mediterranean with nothing visible between the rocks and Africa. Go at dusk, watch the sun drop into the sea, and cycle back in the dark along a road with no cars. It is the finest hour available on the island.
