France
The Luberon is a limestone massif rising from the Provençal plain between Apt and Manosque, its flanks covered in oak forest and its ridgeline dotted with hilltop villages that have changed very little in several centuries. Gordes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Ménerbes, and Lourmarin are the most visited — each with a distinct character and each worth at least a morning of unhurried exploration.
Por qué visitar Luberon
The Luberon's villages are the most photogenic in Provence — Gordes in particular, with its cascade of pale stone houses below a Renaissance château, is one of the most beautiful villages in France. The surrounding countryside rewards walking: the Cedar Forest above Bonnieux, the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, the lavender fields around Sault in July. The food and wine of the Luberon — melons from Cavaillon, truffles from Richerenches, rosé from the Côtes du Luberon — are among the finest in the region.
Cuándo visitar
May and June for spring wildflowers and manageable crowds. Late June through early August for lavender, with the fields around Sault reaching peak bloom in mid-July. September and October for vendange, truffle season beginning, and the best light of the year. July and August are crowded but vibrantly beautiful.
Nova Insider
The ochre trail at Roussillon — the Sentier des Ocres — takes ninety minutes and passes through one of the most surreal landscapes in France: cliffs of vivid orange, red, and yellow ochre above the green valley below. Go at 8am before the car park fills and the trail becomes a queue. The village above is excellent for breakfast afterwards.
