Verdon Gorge — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
The Gorges du Verdon is Europe's answer to the Grand Canyon — a limestone gorge 25 kilometres long and up to 700 metres deep, carved by the turquoise Verdon river through the plateau of Haute-Provence. It is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in France and, outside of the peak summer weeks, one of the most peaceful.
Por qué visitar Verdon Gorge
The gorge can be explored by road, on foot, or by water — each gives a completely different perspective. The Sentier Martel, the classic two-day hiking trail through the gorge, is one of the great walks in France. Kayaking and canoeing through the canyon takes two days and requires camping or a refuge stay. The lake of Sainte-Croix at the western end, an artificial reservoir of extraordinary turquoise colour, is one of the finest places to swim in Provence.
Cuándo visitar
June and September are ideal — warm enough for swimming, uncrowded enough to move freely. July and August bring heavy traffic on the rim roads and queues for boat hire on the lake. The gorge is beautiful in spring when the water is high, but cold for swimming. Avoid the gorge entirely on weekends in high summer.
Nova Insider
The village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, at the western entrance to the gorge, is one of the most beautiful in Provence — a cluster of houses below a waterfall, with a star suspended on a chain between two clifftops above the village. The faïence pottery made here since the 17th century is available in a dozen workshops, and lunch at La Bastide de Moustiers is among the best meals available in the entire region.
