Alpilles & Les Baux — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
The Alpilles are a compact range of white limestone hills rising from the Provençal plain between Arles and Avignon — small in scale but extraordinary in character, with olive groves, garrigue scrubland, and medieval villages perched on the rock. Les Baux-de-Provence, on the highest point of the range, is one of the most dramatic villages in France. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the valley below, is one of the most liveable.
Pourquoi visiter Alpilles & Les Baux
Les Baux occupies an extraordinary position on a limestone spur above a valley of olive trees — the ruined château at the top offers views across the Camargue to the sea. Saint-Rémy is the most pleasant market town in Provence — Wednesday market, excellent restaurants, and the Roman ruins of Glanum just outside town where Van Gogh committed himself to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and painted 150 works in a single year.
Quand visiter
Spring and autumn are ideal — the Alpilles are manageable in size and the light on the white limestone is exceptional.
Summer is hot and the villages crowded. The olive harvest in October and November brings a particular quality to the landscape and the air.
Nova Insider
The Carrières de Lumières at Les Baux — a former quarry transformed into an immersive art projection space — runs a new exhibition each year on a major artist. The scale is extraordinary: the images are projected onto walls 15 metres high in a cathedral-like space carved from solid rock. Book ahead and go on a weekday morning.
