France
Cannes is simultaneously one of the most glamorous and most approachable towns on the Riviera — a city that hosts the world's most famous film festival for two weeks a year and then returns to being a very good French coastal town for the remaining fifty. The nearby Îles de Lérins, a short boat ride from the harbour, offer total tranquillity and some of the clearest water on the coast.
Pourquoi visiter Cannes & Lérins
The Croisette is best understood as theatre — walk it once to see it, then retreat to the old quarter of Le Suquet for real Cannes. The market on the Forville is excellent. For the best day on the water, take the fifteen-minute ferry to Île Saint-Honorat, walk around the entire island in two hours, have lunch at the monastery restaurant, and return on the last boat.
Quand visiter
Avoid Cannes entirely during the Film Festival in May unless you have industry access — the town is completely transformed and hotel prices are extraordinary. June through September is lovely. October is quiet and beautiful.
Nova Insider
The restaurant at the Abbaye de Lérins on Île Saint-Honorat serves wine made by the monks from their own vineyard — one of the smallest and most unusual appellations in France. Lunch there on a Tuesday in June is one of the most civilised experiences available on the Riviera.
