The eastern Algarve is the quietest and most authentically Portuguese part of the coast — a low-lying landscape of lagoon islands, salt pans, and fishing towns that feels entirely different from the cliff and resort country to the west. The Ria Formosa natural park, a system of barrier islands and tidal lagoons stretching from Faro to the Spanish border, is one of the most important wetland ecosystems in Europe and one of Portugal's most overlooked natural treasures.
Pourquoi visiter Faro & East Algarve
Tavira is the most beautiful town in the Algarve — a river town of Islamic-influenced architecture, Roman bridges, and tilted terracotta roofs, with one of the best markets in the south and a beach on an island accessed by ferry. Faro itself is underestimated — the walled old town around the cathedral is excellent, and the bone chapel of the Igreja do Carmo is one of the stranger sights in Portugal. The lagoon beaches of the Ria Formosa, accessible only by boat, are among the emptiest and finest in the country.

Quand visiter
The eastern Algarve works well year-round — the lagoon landscape is beautiful in winter light, and Tavira has a genuine local life that continues outside the tourist season. Summer is warm and the lagoon beaches are perfect. The birdlife in the Ria Formosa is exceptional from October through March.
Nova Insider
Take the ferry from Tavira to Ilha de Tavira and walk east along the barrier island beach until the beach café disappears from sight. In July you will walk for fifteen minutes to find emptiness; in October you will walk for two minutes. Either way, the island beach is extraordinary — miles of white sand, warm shallow water, and no development of any kind on the ocean side.
