French Basque Coast — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
The French Basque coast runs from the Spanish border to the Landes pine forests, encompassing Biarritz — the original European surf resort, where the sport arrived from California in the 1950s and never left — and the more intimate towns of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye. It is the same Basque culture as across the border, filtered through a French sensibility and expressed in a landscape of green hills above Atlantic surf.
Pourquoi visiter French Basque Coast
Biarritz combines a serious surf culture with the faded grandeur of its Belle Époque resort past — the Grand Hôtel, the casino, and the Hôtel du Palais give it an elegance that the Spanish coast cannot match. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a smaller, more intact Basque fishing town with an excellent market, one of the finest tuna fishing ports in France, and a beach that is sheltered enough for comfortable swimming in the Atlantic. The Corniche Basque road between Biarritz and the Spanish border is one of the finest coastal drives in France.
Quand visiter
Spring and autumn are excellent for the Corniche walks and the markets.
Summer is warm and busy — the beach culture here is more Atlantic than Mediterranean, with cooler water and more wind. July and August are crowded but vibrant.
Nova Insider
The tuna auction at Saint-Jean-de-Luz happens on summer mornings when the boats come in — the whole fish are sold by weight on the quayside in a process that takes about ten minutes and has been happening in the same way for centuries. Ask at the tourist office for the schedule, arrive before 7am, and watch an economy organise itself around a single species. Then buy a piece from the market next door and have it grilled for lunch.
