France
Nice is the undisputed capital of the French Riviera — a city of 340,000 with the energy of a metropolis and the light of the Mediterranean. The old town, with its Baroque churches and ochre facades, is one of the finest in southern France. Èze and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, perched above the sea nearby, offer the Riviera at its most dramatically beautiful.
Pourquoi visiter Nice & Côte d'Azur
The Promenade des Anglais is best walked at dawn before the crowds. The Cours Saleya flower market is worth waking up for. The Musée Matisse and Musée National Marc Chagall are world-class and rarely crowded. But the greatest pleasure in Nice is simply getting lost in the Vieille Ville — eating socca from a paper cone, drinking pastis at a zinc bar, and watching the afternoon light change on the painted facades.
Quand visiter
May and June are ideal — the light is extraordinary, the sea is warm enough to swim, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. September is equally good. July and August are busy but vibrant. The Nice Carnival in February is one of Europe's great winter festivals.
Nova Insider
Take the free elevator up to the Castle Hill (Colline du Château) at sunset — the view over the Baie des Anges and the old town rooftops is the best free thing on the entire Riviera. Then walk down through the old town to Chez René Socca and eat standing up.
