Rhodes & Dodecanese — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and one of the most historically layered destinations in the Mediterranean — a city whose old town was built by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century and remains one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, inhabited and functioning within its original walls. The surrounding Dodecanese — Kos, Patmos, Symi, Halki — stretch south towards Turkey in a chain of islands ranging from the popular to the almost entirely unknown.
Pourquoi visiter Rhodes & Dodecanese
Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary preservation — the Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Masters, and the Turkish and Jewish quarters all coexist within medieval walls that have been continuously inhabited since the 14th century. The village of Lindos, on the east coast, with its acropolis above a perfect bay, is one of the most beautiful in Greece. The island of Symi, an hour by fast boat from Rhodes, is a Neoclassical port town of extraordinary beauty that has resisted the development that consumed its larger neighbours.
Quand visiter
May through October for the beaches and the outdoor archaeological sites. Rhodes Old Town works year-round — it is a functioning city rather than a resort. The Dodecanese in June have a quality of light and a level of quiet that July and August cannot offer.
Nova Insider
Take the early morning hydrofoil from Rhodes to Symi and spend the day in the port town of Gialós — the Neoclassical mansions rising from the harbour are among the finest architecture in the Aegean, built by sponge merchants in the 19th century and now gently decaying in the most photogenic possible way. Have lunch at Tholos on the waterfront, swim from the rocks below the restaurant, and return on the evening boat.
