Ronda & White Villages — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
Ronda sits on a plateau divided by a 120-metre gorge, its old town connected to the new by an 18th-century bridge of extraordinary engineering above the vertiginous drop. It is the most dramatic town in Andalusia and the spiritual home of bullfighting — the Real Maestranza bullring, built in 1785, is the oldest and most beautiful in Spain. The white villages of the Serranía de Ronda — Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra, Setenil de las Bodegas — are among the finest in Andalusia.
Pourquoi visiter Ronda & White Villages
The Puente Nuevo bridge and the gorge below are the defining image of Ronda — walk across it at dawn before the tour groups arrive, descend to the bottom of the gorge on the camino path, and look up at the bridge from below for the scale to become real. The old town on the far side of the gorge — the Moorish quarter of La Ciudad — has the finest architecture and the best views. The drive between the white villages through the sierra is one of the great Andalusian road trips.
Quand visiter
March through May for the spring wildflowers in the sierra — the Grazalema Natural Park has one of the richest botanical landscapes in Spain. September for the Corrida Goyesca — the most important bullfight of the year, held in period costume — and the grape harvest in the surrounding vineyards. Summer is hot but manageable given the altitude.
Nova Insider
The village of Setenil de las Bodegas, forty minutes from Ronda, is built into a river gorge with houses constructed directly into the overhanging rock — the cave roof serves as the ceiling of the main street, with bars and restaurants operating in the shade of the cliff face. It is one of the strangest and most photogenic villages in Spain and is almost entirely unknown outside Andalusia. Have lunch at one of the cave restaurants, order the local pork, and eat under a ceiling that was here before the Romans.
