Italy
The Val d'Orcia is the most beautiful valley in Italy — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of gentle hills, cypress-lined roads, and medieval hill towns that has been farmed and painted since the Renaissance. Montalcino produces Brunello, one of Italy's greatest wines. Montepulciano produces Vino Nobile. Pienza, built to order by Pope Pius II in 1459 as a model Renaissance city, contains more architectural ambition per square metre than almost anywhere in Europe.
Pourquoi visiter Val d'Orcia
The Brunello estates around Montalcino range from the internationally famous — Biondi-Santi, Banfi, Altesino — to the small family producers who make wines of equal quality in quantities of a few thousand bottles. The road from San Quirico d'Orcia to Pienza passes through the most photographed landscape in Tuscany. The thermal baths at Bagno Vignoni — a hot spring in the centre of a medieval village, the piazza replaced by a steaming pool — are one of the strangest and finest places in the region.
Quand visiter
May for the wildflowers and the spring light on the hills. September and October for the harvest and the most golden light of the year. The Val d'Orcia in winter, with snow on the distant Amiata and frost on the cypress trees, is extraordinarily beautiful and almost entirely empty.
Nova Insider
The Brunello harvest dinner at Fattoria dei Barbi in Montalcino — held every year in late September for the estate's workers and a small number of invited guests — is one of the finest and most authentic wine events in Italy. Contact the estate directly in June to ask about availability. The wine is exceptional and the food is Sienese at its most serious.
