La Axarquía — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
La Axarquía is the mountainous comarca immediately east of Málaga — a landscape of steep valleys, Moorish villages, and terraced hillsides of olive, almond, and subtropical fruit, rising from the coast to over 2,000 metres in the Sierra Tejeda. It is the most authentically Andalusian part of the Costa del Sol's hinterland, almost entirely unknown to international tourism and deeply rewarding for those who find it.
Perché visitare La Axarquía
Frigiliana, Cómpeta, and Sayalonga are the most beautiful of the white villages — each with a distinct character, excellent local wine, and the kind of restaurants that serve the same families every Sunday. The Ruta del Sol y del Vino, a walking route between the villages, passes through vineyards producing the sweet Moscatel wine that the region has made for centuries. The views from the ridge above Cómpeta, on a clear day, extend to the Rif mountains of Morocco.
Quando visitare
Spring is exceptional — the almond blossom in February transforms the valleys, and the wildflowers on the upper slopes in April and May are extraordinary.
Summer is hot in the valleys but cool at altitude.
Autumn brings the grape harvest and the olive picking.
Winter is mild on the coast-facing slopes and snow-covered above 1,500 metres.
Nova Insider
The bodega at Cómpeta — Bodegas Almijara — produces a Moscatel Naturalmente Dulce that is one of the finest sweet wines made in Spain and is almost entirely unknown outside the village. Visit on a weekday morning, ask for the family, and they will give you a tour of the cellar that was built into the hillside in the 18th century. Buy as many bottles as you can carry.
