Menorca — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
Menorca is the Balearic island that got away — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of extraordinary beaches, prehistoric monuments, and a quietly sophisticated local culture that has resisted the mass tourism development that transformed its larger neighbours. The island is small enough to drive across in forty minutes but varied enough to reward a week of exploration: the British-influenced elegance of Mahón, the Spanish character of Ciutadella, and between them a coast of coves so numerous that a different beach is accessible every day.
Perché visitare Menorca
The beaches of Menorca are the finest in the Balearics — particularly the south coast coves of Macarella, Turqueta, and Cala Mitjana, accessible only on foot or by boat, with water of extraordinary clarity over white sand. The Camí de Cavalls, a medieval coastal path that circles the entire island in seven stages, is the finest long-distance walking route in the Balearics. The prehistoric Talayotic monuments — stone towers and navetas built between 1400 and 800 BC — are among the finest Bronze Age remains in Europe.
Quando visitare
June through September for the beaches — the south coast coves require good weather to reach by foot. May and October for the walking and the island at its most authentic. Menorca in winter is mild, quiet, and the island's local life is at its most visible — the gin distillery at Mahón, the cheese producers of the interior, and the weekly market at Es Mercadal are all excellent.
Nova Insider
Menorca gin — Gin de Mahón — has been produced on the island since the British occupation in the 18th century and is almost entirely unknown outside the Balearics. The Destileries Xoriguer distillery on the Mahón waterfront offers tastings of the original recipe, made from grape spirit rather than grain, with a flavour entirely unlike London dry gin. Buy a bottle of the aged reserva — it is exceptional and costs a fraction of comparable gins in the international market.
