Avignon and Arles are the two great historic cities of Provence — the former a walled papal city of extraordinary preservation, the latter a Roman city that has been continuously inhabited for 2,500 years and whose amphitheatre still hosts bullfights every summer. Between them lies the Camargue, a vast wetland delta of the Rhône where white horses run wild and flamingos feed in the shallow lagoons.

The Palais des Papes in Avignon is the largest Gothic palace in Europe — the scale and the history are genuinely overwhelming. The Pont d'Avignon, the famous half-bridge, is best viewed from the other bank of the Rhône at dusk. Arles rewards those who read Vincent van Gogh before arriving — he painted the town obsessively during his most productive year, and the Fondation Vincent van Gogh has an exceptional collection. The Arles Photography Festival in July is one of the great cultural events of the French summer.

Avignon in July during the Festival d'Avignon — the largest performing arts festival in the world — is extraordinary if you have tickets and chaotic if you do not. May, June, September, and October are excellent throughout. Arles is best in spring before the summer heat makes the Roman sites uncomfortable.

Take the small ferry across the Rhône from Avignon to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon — it runs all day and costs almost nothing. The view of the walled city from the other bank, with the Palais des Papes rising above the ramparts, is the definitive image of Avignon and is almost entirely absent from the tourist photographs taken from inside the walls.
