The central Algarve is most crowded in July and August — manageable in Carvoeiro, overwhelming in Albufeira. May, June, and September offer the best balance. Golf is excellent from October through April when the courses are in good condition and the prices significantly lower.

The Benagil Cave is best reached by stand-up paddleboard rather than the tourist boats — the paddle from Benagil beach takes fifteen minutes each way, gives you complete control over your time inside the cave, and costs a fraction of the boat tour. Go at 7am before the boats start and you will have the cave to yourself.
