Italy
Chianti is the wine landscape that defines Tuscany in the imagination — a rolling terrain of vineyards, olive groves, and cypress trees between Florence and Siena, producing the Sangiovese-based wines that have made Tuscany's reputation. The Chianti Classico zone, the historic heart of the appellation, runs between Greve in Chianti and Castelnuovo Berardenga and contains some of the finest estates in Italy.
Waarom Chianti bezoeken
The strade bianche — the white gravel roads that connect the Chianti farms and villages — are the finest driving and cycling routes in Tuscany. Greve in Chianti has an excellent enoteca and a Saturday market that draws producers from across the zone. The estates of Badia a Coltibuono, Castello di Ama, and Antinori's Tignanello vineyard offer tastings that range from the casual to the deeply serious.
Wanneer bezoeken
September and October for the vendange — the harvest transforms the landscape and the estates are animated with activity. May and June for the spring greenery and wildflowers between the vines. July and August are busy on the most famous roads — the Chiantigiana — but the back routes remain quiet.
Nova Insider
The Chianti Classico Grand Selection — the top tier of the appellation, introduced in 2014 — is made by a small number of estates from single vineyards and aged for a minimum of thirty months. It is almost unknown outside Italy and represents the finest expression of Sangiovese in Tuscany. Ask specifically for it at the estate tastings — many producers make it but don't advertise it to casual visitors.
