Florence & Fiesole — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
Florence is the greatest concentration of Renaissance art in the world — a city of 380,000 that contains more masterpieces per square kilometre than any other place on earth. The Uffizi, the Accademia, the Bargello, the Baptistery, Brunelleschi's dome — each would be the defining cultural institution of any other city. Fiesole, the Etruscan hill town above Florence, offers the same landscape without the crowds and, from its hilltop terraces, the definitive view over the city below.
Waarom Florence & Fiesole bezoeken
Book the Uffizi and the Accademia months in advance and go on a Tuesday morning when the tour groups are thinner. The Bargello, which contains the finest collection of Renaissance sculpture in Italy including Donatello's David, is consistently overlooked and rarely crowded. The Oltrarno neighbourhood south of the Arno — the Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens, the artisan workshops of the Borgo San Jacopo — is the most authentic and most enjoyable part of Florence for those who have seen the canonical sights.
Wanneer bezoeken
April, May, and September are ideal — beautiful weather, manageable crowds, and the city at its most functional. June through August is hot and very crowded. November through March is quiet and cold — the museums are uncrowded and the restaurants are full of Florentines rather than tourists.
Nova Insider
The Corridoio Vasariano — the secret elevated passageway that connects the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti via the Uffizi and over the Ponte Vecchio — was closed for restoration for years and has recently reopened with a limited booking system. Walking through a private corridor above the heads of the tourists below, past portraits of the Medici, is the most singular experience available in Florence.
