Maremma Coast — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
The Maremma is Tuscany's wild coast — a landscape of pine forests, dunes, and lagoons stretching south from Livorno to the Lazio border, with an interior of volcanic hills, Etruscan ruins, and cattle ranches worked by the butteri, Tuscany's own cowboys. It is the least known and least visited part of Tuscany and, for those reasons, among the most rewarding.
Waarom Maremma Coast bezoeken
The Parco Regionale della Maremma — the Maremma Natural Park — contains some of the finest unspoiled coastline in Italy, accessible only on foot or by boat, with beaches of a quality that the more famous Tuscan resorts cannot approach. Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano on the Monte Argentario peninsula are the most elegant resorts on the Tyrrhenian coast. The Etruscan sites of the interior — Pitigliano, Sovana, Sorano — are among the least visited significant archaeological sites in Italy.
Wanneer bezoeken
May through September for the coast and the beaches. The Maremma interior is excellent year-round — the Etruscan sites are best in spring and autumn when the light is low and the sites are uncrowded. The wild boar hunting season in autumn brings the local restaurants to their finest.
Nova Insider
The village of Pitigliano — built on a volcanic tuff plateau above a gorge, its buildings seemingly growing from the rock itself — is one of the most extraordinary places in Italy and is almost entirely unknown to international tourism. Drive south from Grosseto for ninety minutes, arrive in the early morning before the mist has cleared, and walk the medieval streets above the gorge. Then eat at Hostaria del Ceccottino in the village — the wild boar ragù is definitive.
