Costa del Golf — Boutique Hotels & Travel Guide
The stretch of coast between Estepona and Sotogrande, west of Marbella, contains the greatest concentration of golf courses in continental Europe — over 70 courses within an hour's drive, ranging from municipal layouts to the finest courses in Spain. Sotogrande, at the western end near Gibraltar, is one of the most exclusive residential and golf communities in Europe.
Why Visit Costa del Golf
Valderrama, the Ryder Cup course at Sotogrande, is widely considered the finest golf course in continental Europe — a tightly wooded, strategically demanding layout that rewards precision over power. The surrounding area has half a dozen courses of comparable quality. For non-golfers, Estepona has a beautiful old quarter and the best fish market on the western costa.
When to Visit
Golf is best from October through April when the courses are in peak condition and the heat is manageable. The summer months are popular but demanding — early morning tee times are essential. Sotogrande in August is a social season of its own for the polo community.
Nova Insider
Book a tee time at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande — the original course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1964, older and less famous than Valderrama but equally beautiful and considerably easier to get onto. Play in the morning, have lunch at the club, and watch the afternoon polo at the Santa María Polo Club next door. It is one of the most civilised sporting days available in southern Spain.
