Naples is the loudest, most chaotic, most brilliantly alive city in Italy — a place of extraordinary art, world-defining food, and a street energy that overwhelms and exhilarates in equal measure. Pompeii, thirty kilometres to the southeast, is the most haunting archaeological site in Europe: an entire Roman city preserved under volcanic ash since 79AD, still being excavated today.
Why Visit Naples & Pompeii
The Naples Archaeological Museum holds the finest collection of Roman art in existence, including treasures excavated from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The historic centre — a UNESCO World Heritage site — is a grid of Greek streets overlaid with Roman, medieval, and Baroque architecture, all of it lived in and loud. Pompeii requires at least three hours to do it justice; the less-visited site of Herculaneum, smaller but better preserved, is often more rewarding.

When to Visit
Naples works in any season — it is a city, not a resort, and it functions year-round. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking. Pompeii is best visited early morning before the tour groups arrive, in any month outside August when the heat on the unshaded site is extreme.
Nova Insider
The underground Naples — Napoli Sotterranea — is a network of Greek and Roman tunnels, cisterns, and wartime shelters running beneath the entire city. The guided tour takes ninety minutes and goes places that most visitors to Naples never imagine exist. Book in advance and go on a Tuesday morning when the groups are smallest.
