Santorini is the most dramatic island in the Mediterranean — a volcanic caldera with whitewashed villages perched on the rim above a flooded crater, the whole thing descending in vertical cliffs to a sea of an almost impossible blue. It is also genuinely crowded in summer and genuinely beautiful at any time of year. The broader Cyclades — Paros, Naxos, Milos, Folegandros — offer variations on the same Aegean landscape with considerably less company.
Why Visit Santorini & Cyclades
The sunset from Oia is the famous experience — and it is, objectively, one of the finest views in the Mediterranean, worth the crowd that gathers for it. Santorini's volcanic beaches — the black sand of Perissa, the red rocks of Akrotiri — are unlike anything else in Greece. The Minoan site of Akrotiri, a Bronze Age city preserved under volcanic ash, is the Aegean's answer to Pompeii. Paros has better beaches, quieter villages, and a quality of life that Santorini's success has made impossible there.

When to Visit
May and June are ideal for Santorini — beautiful, warm, and manageable. September is equally good. July and August are intensely crowded — the cruise ships bring thousands of visitors daily to a very small island. The Cyclades in October have a melancholy beauty and almost no other visitors.
Nova Insider
Stay in Firostefani rather than Oia or Fira — the same caldera views, the same sunset, and a fraction of the accommodation prices. The path between Firostefani and Oia along the caldera rim takes about ninety minutes on foot and is the finest walk on the island. Do it at dawn in the direction of Oia and you will have the path almost entirely to yourself.
