Ibiza is two islands in one — the electronic music capital of the world, where the summer club season runs from June through September with an intensity that has no equivalent anywhere in Europe, and a quieter, older island of whitewashed villages, pine forests, and extraordinary sunsets that predates the clubs by several centuries. The UNESCO-listed old town of Dalt Vila, the fishing village of Sant Joan, and the beaches of the north coast belong to the second Ibiza, and they are genuinely excellent.
Why Visit Ibiza
Dalt Vila — the walled upper town of Ibiza Town — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Phoenician, Roman, and medieval layers, its ramparts offering views over the harbour and the sunrise that explain why the island was considered sacred in antiquity. The north of the island — Sant Joan, Portinatx, the beaches of Benirràs — is a different world from the south: quieter, greener, and full of the original Ibiza that the hippies found in the 1960s and the club culture has not entirely displaced.

When to Visit
June through September for the club season — book months in advance for the major venues and accommodation. May and October for the beautiful island without the summer intensity. The opening and closing parties in late May and early October are when the music is at its most serious. Ibiza in winter is almost deserted but genuinely beautiful.
Nova Insider
The sunset at Café del Mar in Sant Antoni is the famous experience — and the music programming and the view are genuinely excellent. But the finest sunset on the island is at Benirràs beach in the north, where drummers gather every Sunday evening at dusk in a ritual that has been happening since the 1970s. Take the winding road through the pines, arrive an hour before sunset, and watch the light change over the sea to the sound of djembe drums. It is free, it is extraordinary, and it is entirely Ibizan.
