The Serra de Tramuntana is the mountain spine of Mallorca — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of limestone peaks, terraced olive groves, and stone villages that runs the entire length of the island's northwest coast. It is the finest landscape in the Balearics and one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean: the mountains drop directly to the sea in cliffs of several hundred metres, and the road that traverses them — the Ma-10 — is one of the great drives in Europe.
Why Visit Serra de Tramuntana
The villages of Deià, Valldemossa, and Sóller each have a distinct character — Deià was the home of Robert Graves and retains a literary, artistic quality; Valldemossa is where Chopin spent a winter with George Sand and wrote some of his finest nocturnes; Sóller sits in an orange grove valley above its port, connected by a vintage tram that has been running since 1913. The hiking trails through the mountains — particularly the GR221 dry stone route — are among the finest in Spain.

When to Visit
March through June for the wildflowers and the spring light on the mountains. September and October for the olive harvest and the finest walking conditions.
Summer is excellent for the coastal swimming but hot for serious hiking.
The Tramuntana in winter is cold and sometimes snowy above 1,000 metres — beautiful and completely empty.
Nova Insider
The Camí de l'Arxiduc, a mountain path above Valldemossa built by Archduke Ludwig Salvator in the 19th century, offers the finest coastal panorama in Mallorca — a two-hour walk along a ridge between 800 and 1,000 metres with views in both directions along the northwest coast. Go on a weekday in May and you will share the path with almost nobody. Bring water and a picnic — there is nothing on the route.
